Spray Foam Insulation for Soundproofing

Installing insulation specifically for soundproofing your exterior or interior walls will of course hold the heat in, but also dampen the noise transfer between rooms and coming from the outside. A common reason for this application is muffling outside noise in a home on a busy street, or simply adding an extra layer of sound barrier between home and suite.

Are you thinking of soundproofing your finished basement suite ceiling or other walls/ceilings in your home? Here are some considerations to take into account:

Drywall removal, repairs, and paint touch-ups will be required: You will need to engage another trade to handle the removal of the existing drywall prior to insulation, then the re-application of drywall, finishing, and paint once insulation is complete. There are techniques available to drill and inject walls and floors, but their effectiveness is suspect as you cannot guarantee insulation will be evenly applied without voids. You should also speak to your drywall trade regarding types of sound bar, drywall, etc. that enhance acoustical performance as insulation is only one contributor to effective acoustic separation.

The suite/area should be unoccupied: Because the majority of the ceiling will need to be removed to ensure an effective system, the suite should be empty and unoccupied. Drywall removal/finishing, paint, and insulation create a significant amount of dust/fumes that can damage furniture, floors, and be hazardous to occupants. When discussing the scope with prospective drywall trades, ensure they are planning to install floor/wall protection as is required to protect adjacent finished surfaces.
